FLAG ETIQUETTE ON MEMORIAL DAY

In Accordance with the Flag Code Section (3m) the US flag is to be displayed at half-staff from sunrise until noon and at full-staff from noon until sunset.

NEW MEDICARE CARDS

Changes are coming to your Medicare card. By April 2019, your card will be replaced with one that no longer shows your Social Security number. Instead, your card will have a new Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) that will be used for billing and for checking your eligibility and claim status. And it will all happen automatically Ė you wonít have to pay anyone or give anyone information, no matter what someone might tell you.

Having your Social Security number removed from your Medicare card helps fight medical identity theft and protect your medical and financial information. But even with these changes, scammers will still look for ways to take what doesnít belong to them. Here are some ways to avoid Medicare scams:

Is someone calling, claiming to be from Medicare, and asking for your Social Security number or bank information? Hang up. Thatís a scam. First, Medicare wonít call you. Second, Medicare will never ask for your Social Security number or bank information.

Is someone asking you to pay for your new card? Thatís a scam. Your new Medicare card is free.

Is someone threatening to cancel your benefits if you donít give up information or money? Also a scam. New Medicare cards will be mailed out to you automatically. There wonít be any changes to your benefits.

FAIRCHILD ANNUAL

I have been asked to send the following message to all Air Force retirees.

" Sir/Ma'am, I have been assigned an amazing opportunity to create a book that captures the culture of Fairchild AFB. This culture doesnít exist without the hard work of those that came before use! Thank you for your service and everything that you created. I am leaving a section of my book open for Retirees to input any photos that you may have. Also, with or without photo submissions, I would love to have some write ups of your past stories here at Fairchild or what Fairchild means to you as a Retired Armed Service Member. Please have submissions to myself, 2d Lt William Conant at william.conant.4@us.af.mil by COB Friday 2 June 2017. Please include your name, rank, and a brief description of your AFSC/Job. Thank you and have a great day"

NATIONAL POPPY DAY 26 MAY 2017

After World War I, the poppy flourished in Europe. Scientists attributed the growth to soils in France and Belgium becoming enriched with lime from the rubble left by the war. From the dirt and mud grew a beautiful red poppy. The red poppy came to symbolize the blood shed during battle following the publication of the wartime poem ďIn Flanders Fields.Ē The poem was written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, M.D. while serving on the front lines.

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses row on row.

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved, and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

On September 27, 1920, the poppy became the official flower of The American Legion family to memorialize the soldiers who fought and died during the war. In 1924, the distribution of poppies became a national program of The American Legion. Each year, members of The American Legion family, led by the American Legion Auxiliary, distribute poppies with a request that the person receiving the flower make a donation to support the future of veterans, active-duty military personnel and their families with medical and financial needs. Poppy Day is celebrated in countries around the world. This year, The American Legion brought National Poppy Day to the United States by asking Congress to designate the Friday before Memorial Day, as National Poppy Day.
